Reflections on the Appalachian Trail pt II: The Mid Atlantic States

In the fall of last year April and I did a late southbound hike of 3/4 of the Appalachian Trail.  I am just now getting around to posting some photos of the hike.  Pictures from the New England states can be found here.  Click here for our trailjournal.

Why you should (never) southbound the AT in the late season pt 2/3:  The Mid Atlantic States

Fall in the pastures of Eastern Vermont

Incredible foliage approaching the Green Mtns in Vermont

Constantly removing this years crop of maple leafs from our sticks

The Green Mtns had some great views ... and more than a few MUDs

Taking stock our food supplies

As the weather cooled and rain started keep dry feet became a constant struggle.

Trail magic on a Sunday morning at the trailhead.  We were literally hiking past churches 15 minutes prior.

This is one about 30 pictures I have from the trip in the 'April looking off into the distance from the top of ridge' category.

To keep ourself enterained we did quite a bit of retro-blazing, ie looking for old trail in places we felt the trail should logically go ...

... and were often rewarded by finding, in the middle of broad valleys, many signs to indicate the historical footpath.

Grand tooth Poplars in the Greens

Some sections of trail were slightly less rewarding than others

Still working on the seam sealing of our tarptent a 700 miles into the hike

The most common failure mechanism of almost any pair of shoes I wear

Another state line, another bag of state line Skittles

Hiking through fields in NY section

Meanwhile rocks start appearing in the trail

Palmerton Superfund site, on trail.

Highly caffeineted crosswording in Palmerton.

Some nasty cheese fries, do not attempt this outside the context of a long distance hike

Brownies for dinner!

The trails in PA were practically like a shooting gallery on weekends.  Hunter, boy scout group, hunter, boy scout group.

Getting a ride back to the 501 shelter after checking out Fiddleheads band play in PA.  The band was really sweet and consisted of a few very accomplished thruhikers singing about hiking.  Very inspirational.
